Jakarta, Indonesia – 4th March 2024 – PT Centratama Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (“Centratama”) and EdgePoint Infrastructure (“EdgePoint”), have officially opened digital libraries in two suburban schools in East Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The establishment of digital libraries in MTS Maulana Ibrahim, Gresik, East Java and SMPN 4 Sentolo, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, is part of the Connectivity for Communities programme – a regional corporate responsibility initiative aimed at providing access to connectivity for students in underserved communities. Representatives from Gresik Regency, Kulon Progo Regency, as well as the representatives from MTS Maulana Ibrahim, Gresik and SMPN 4 Sentolo, Kulon Progo attended the ceremony as beneficiaries of the facilities.

In collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, Centratama and Edgepoint launched this program aimed at providing fully equipped digital libraries in both schools with dedicated spaces designed to serve as hubs for learning, research, and personal development. Equipped with seamless and unlimited internet connection, these spaces provide students with access to a wide array of educational materials, e-books, interactive learning platforms and interactive multimedia content related to their academic subjects as well as personal interests. The program will also provide comprehensive capacity development programs for school staff, ensuring the sustainability and effective management of the digital libraries.

Raymond Yan, CEO of Centratama said, “We believe that access to information and education is a fundamental right, and we recognize the transformative power of digital education. Through this Connectivity for Communities programme, we aim to empower students in underserved areas, giving them more opportunities for a better, brighter future. This program is also aligned with our commitment to make a positive impact in the communities we serve, and in the long run creating a more digitally inclusive Indonesia”.

The schools were selected in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity based on criteria such as prosperity levels as well as overall highest education levels for students in the area. For example, Gresik, East Java has 3,447 families classified as pre-prosperous and 2,294 families classified as level I prosperous. While in Sentolo, an area within Kulon Progo, 89% of the substandard housing population has an income of less than 1 USD/person/day, while the highest level of education attained is elementary school (46%).

Misbahul Munir, Assistance II Economic and Development of Regional Secretary of Gresik commented, “The young students are going to become our future. We should encourage them to always learn new things from various sources of information, be it from reading books or other forms of educational materials. We recognize that leveraging technology is the best way to support educational efforts, it provides fast access to resources and keeps our future generation informed. Therefore, we greatly appreciate and are fully supportive of this initiative by Centratama, EdgePoint and Habitat for Humanity.”

Similarly, Triyono, Regional Secretary of Kulon Progo said, “We commend Centratama, EdgePoint and Habitat for Humanity for their dedication to improving educational resources in our community. This initiative aligns with our vision for a digitally inclusive future, and we look forward to witnessing the positive effects it will have on our children.”

Hilal Badri, Headmaster at MTS Maulana Ibrahim, Gresik commented, “Before the construction of the digital library, the students had limited access to connectivity and devices to access the internet. We are grateful that Centratama, EdgePoint and Habitat for Humanity are willing to build us this fully equipped digital library. Not only providing the younger generation with a better access to digital literacy, but this will also help them develop their interests.”

Subiyanto, Headmaster at SMPN 4 Sentolo, Kulon Progo added that this no longer hinders programs the schools would like to launch as it is not limited by poor internet access, “We are grateful to Centratama, EdgePoint and Habitat for Humanity as we have been planning to use technology to enhance our education and now have the bandwidth to do so. Having access to seamless and unlimited internet will undoubtedly enhance our students’ learning experience, and the digital library is set to open new avenues for learning and exploration.”

To date, Connectivity for Communities program has facilitated connectivity for a total of 6 schools, impacting more than 5000 students. The program is targeted to benefit another 10 more schools in 2024.
